Shameless returns with 3.1m viewers on Channel 4

LONDON - Channel 4's Manchester-set comedy drama 'Shameless' kicked off its sixth series last night with 3.1m viewers, higher than any of its ratings for the previous series, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The Gallagher family's return, with new member of the brood, baby Stella, attracted 3.1m viewers and an 18.9% share of the 10-11pm audience. Including Channel 4+1 figures it reached 3.3m viewers.

BBC One's 'Crimewatch', which last night saw Kirsty Young and the team appealing for help to solve the case of a couple attacked by a gang wearing gimp masks, won the 9pm slot with 4.5m viewers and a 19.3% share of the audience.

The final episode of the seventh series of forensic drama 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' drew 3.2m viewers and a 13.7% share of the 9-10pm audience to Five.

Channel 4's documentary 'Gok Wan: Too Fat Too Young', exploring teenage obesity with stylist Gok Wan, who himself weighed more than 20 stone as a teenager, attracted 2.9m viewers and a 12.5% share of the 9-10pm audience. Including Channel 4+1 figures it reached 3.1m viewers.

ITV1's reality series 'Total Emergency', following all three emergency services in Sheffield, pulled in 2.7m viewers and an 11.7% share in the same slot.

It beat the final part of BBC Two's 'Million Dollar Traders' documentary series, following eight ordinary people given a million dollars to run their own hedge fund, which netted 1.1m viewers and a 4.8% share of the same audience.
