ITV1 murders competition with 8.1m for Ripper drama

LONDON - ITV1 profited best from the snow yesterday when 8.1m viewers cooped up at home chose its serial killer drama 'Whitechapel' while 6.3m tuned into BBC One, according to unofficial overnight figures.

'Whitechapel' features former 'Spooks' actor Rupert Penry-Jones as detective inspector Joseph Chandler. Chandler is appointed to head a murder inquiry after a woman is killed by a man mimicking the deeds of Jack the Ripper.

It led the primetime ratings with a 29.7% share of viewing, with a BBC One edition of 'Who Do You Think You Are?' featuring impressionist Rory Bremner coming second with a 23.1% share.

The two main channels cornered most of the bumper snowbound audience, leaving Channel 4 a distant third.

C4 documentary 'Backstairs Billy: The Queen Mum's Butler', telling the story of William Tallon, who was evicted after the Queen Mother's death, managed 1.9m viewers and a 7% share. Another 200,000 viewers watched it on Channel 4+1.

BBC Two debuted 'Moses Jones', its new modern-day detective drama set in London's Ugandan community; it brought in 1.4m viewers for a 5% share.

'Edison' was the film on offer on Five, garnering an audience of 1m and a 4.1% share.
