Grand Designs makes grand return with 4.1m viewers

LONDON - A new series of Channel 4's 'Grand Designs' tied with BBC One's 'The Secret Life of Elephants' in the prime time slot last night, pulling in 4.1m viewers each, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The first episode of the new 'Grand Designs' series, which celebrates its 10th birthday this year, saw presenter Kevin McCloud guiding a couple through their plan to restore a 200-year-old industrial building.

It pulled in 4.1m viewers and a 17.4% share of the 9-10pm audience. Including Channel 4+1 figures it reached 4.4m viewers.

The third and final part of BBC One documentary series 'The Secret Life of Elephants', which saw the team tranquilise a four-ton female elephant in order to examine her calf, pulled in 4.1m viewers and a 17.3% share of the 9-10pm audience.

ITV1's detective drama 'Taggart', starring Alex Norton as DCI Matt Burke, drew 3.6m viewers and a 14.9% share of the same audience.

The final part of BBC Two's documentary 'The City Uncovered with Evan Davis', which saw the Radio 4 'Today' presenter examining the roots of the current economic crisis, netted 1.4m viewers and a 5.9% share of the 9-10pm audience.

It beat Five's airing of action thriller 'The Hard Corps', starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, which attracted 1m viewers and a 5.4% share of the 9pm to 11.15pm audience.
