The Torch will arrive in the UK on Friday 18 May 2012 and will visit villages, towns and cities across the UK before heading back to London the weekend before the 2012 Games begin.
The route has been designed to ensure 95% of the British population to be within a one hour of the relay and will showcase the best of the UK from dynamic urban areas to places of outstanding natural.
Members of the public will be able to get involved by applying to be one of the 8,000 torchbearers. A nomination process is expected to be announced in May 2011.
"The Olympic Torch Relay heralds the start of the London 2012 Games, bringing people across the UK together to celebrate the spirit of the Games," said Locog chair Sebastian Coe.
"We will be working closely with villages, towns and cities the length and breadth of the UK to ensure that as each community welcomes the Olympic Flame, they do so in a way that is unique and special to their area."
Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung have been signed up to sponsor the event and will be establishing community based programmes to support the staging of the relay.
"We know from firsthand experience that the Torch Relay helps to inspire a whole country to get involved in the spirit of the Games," said Coca-Cola Great Britain and Ireland President Sanjay Guha.
"We intend to use the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay to shine a light on the best of British youth and encourage people to get involved in their local communities. We look forward to giving young people from across the UK the chance to carry the Olympic Flame."
