The show’s characters will host the Olympic flame in the fictional London borough of Walford on 23 July 2012, in a partially-live episode on BBC One.

In last night’s episode (15 November) character Billy Mitchell, played by actor Perry Fenwick, discovered he had been nominated as a torchbearer.

The show, which reaches some 10 millions viewers per episode, will broadcast Fenwick carrying the flame on its way to the London 2012 opening ceremony which takes place four days later.

Locog chair Lord Sebastian Coe said the announcement was "a great addition" to the torch’s relay route.

"I’m sure the people of Walford will now start planning their celebrations to welcome the flame to Albert Square," he added. "Along with people right round the UK, the residents of Albert Square will be getting involved to make this their moment to shine."

As reported in Event, last week

It will pass within 10 miles of 95% of the UK population.
