ITV1 loses out to BBC One in Saturday night ratings

LONDON - BBC One hospital drama 'Casualty' drew the best ratings on Saturday night with 5.1m viewers compared to the 3.5m mustered by ITV1's 'A Touch Of Frost', according to unofficial overnight figures.

Earlier in the evening, a repeat of BBC One's family-friendly 'Doctor Who', which went out at 6pm-7pm, achieved a 13.4% share with 2.1m viewers tuning in.

However, running at the same time, ITV1's 'You've Been Framed' outperformed the BBC sci-fi drama, commanding 3.7m viewers and a 23.5% share.

BBC One's obstacle course game show 'Total Wipeout', which aired between 7pm and 8pm, continued to take the ratings by storm. It achieved a 24.8% share with 4.6m viewers -- the highest audience share of the terrestrial channels in that timeslot.

Rivalling it was ITV1s flagship game show 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire'. It attracted just over 4m viewers and a share of 20.5% at 7.55pm-8.55pm.

The audience figures for Channel 4's Big Brother will add further fuel to those calling for its abolition. The once schedule-dominating reality show only managed to pull in 1.6m viewers on Saturday night at 9pm, a 7.8% share, while another 274,000 viewers tuned in on Channel 4+1 an hour later.

The clear winner in the 9pm slot was BBC One medical drama 'Casualty'. It attracted almost a quarter of the total TV audience and was watched by 5.1m viewers, a 24.6% share.

ITV1's 'A Touch Of Frost' brought in 3.5m viewers and an 18.2% share in its 8.55pm-10.55pm slot.

BBC Two did not fare badly on Saturday night -- an episode of the oft-repeated comedy 'Dads' Army' at 7pm was watched by 2.5m viewers (a 14.3% share), while coverage of the BBC Proms half an hour later commanded a 9.8% share and an audience of 1.9m.

Friday night was eviction night on 'Big Brother', yet its ratings performance was lacklustre when housemate Noirin was kicked out of the house -- it drew an audience of 2.5m and a share of 12.2%.

Airing at the same time, 'Doc Martin' on ITV1 triumphed, pulling in 4.1m viewers and a 19.9% share while BBC One's 'Hotel Babylon' was watched by 3.1m viewers, a share of 15%.
