How to be a great workplace: MTV

As part of our #EventCareers and Workplace report, we take a look at the working culture at MTV.

"Staff are encouraged to submit new business ideas to a global council"

The MTV brand is notoriously young and loud, as reflected in the workplace. "It really is how you’d imagine it to be, relaxed yet full of energy," says Ali Thompson, senior manager at MTV Events. "Multiple TVs pump out content, people play music through speakers rather than headphones and eight-foot fluffy logos line the corridors – you never forget where you work."

The bright and buzzing workplace is complemented with programmes designed to immerse staff in the business. Employees can apply for a three-month sabbatical in offices all over the world after five years, take part in internal mentoring schemes and are encouraged to share ideas.

"An initiative was launched last year called The Pitch, where staff submit ideas to a global council who then select the best ones to put forward to senior management," says Thompson. "The winning idea receives significant financial backing."

He continues: "Less experienced staff are encouraged to have their say through The MTV Future Collective. The MTV intern population meet monthly with company heads and are encouraged to give feedback on programmes, what MTV should be doing next, as well as blogging and attending festivals and gigs for the company."

Thompson points out that there are a number of rewards on offer to staff too, including Friday screenings of new shows with pizza and drinks, holiday, gym and cable TV discounts and staff parties.

"We also have ‘Summer Fridays’, where we can work an extra hour each day from Monday to Thursday throughout June, July and August and break from the office after lunch on Fridays," he enthuses.
