The three groups will be responsible for: producing a business plan and scoping the legal framework for creating a professional institute; mapping the existing provision of higher education courses in events management; and developing membership structures, tiers and criteria for the institute.

The proposal for the Institute of Event Management involves companies such as Olympic organiser Locog, the sector skills council People 1st, FDF (formerly Foundation Degree Forward), several UK universities and all of the meetings and events industry trade associations.

"A key part of meeting this objective will be engagement with industry leaders in support of a sector quality, skills and qualifications strategy and implementation programme," said BVEP Chairman Michael Hirst.

"This should include an Institute of Event Management, a framework for continuing professional development, and a portal website to signpost skill needs, industry-accredited qualifications, further and higher education programmes in event management, and career opportunities."

The next meeting will take place at the Event UK exhibition from 21 – 22 September, when results from its questionnaire asking the events industry opinions on the Institute of Event Management will be revealed.
