Ashes to Ashes pips ITV1 drama with 5.6m viewers

LONDON - BBC One 80s-set cop drama 'Ashes to Ashes' pulled in 5.6m viewers last night, beating ITV1 drama 'Compulsion', according to unofficial overnight figures.

Last night's instalment of 'Ashes to Ashes', focusing on the world of animal liberation extremists and their imprisoned leader, attracted a 22.8% share of the 9pm-10pm audience.

ITV1 drama 'Compulsion', about a man who coerces the daughter of a rich Indian businessman into sleeping with him, drew 4.7m viewers and a 21.9% share of the 9pm-11pm audience.

BBC Two's coverage of the World Championship Snooker final, which saw John Higgins claim the title for the third time, pulled in 2.1m viewers and a 9.3% share of the 8pm-11pm audience.

Channel 4 drama 'Endgame', based on Robert Harvey's book 'The Fall of Apartheid' about the years of secret talks between white Afrikaaner leaders and the ANC that made Nelson Mandela's release possible, drew 837,000 viewers and a 3.9% share of the 9pm-11pm audience. Including Channel 4+1 figures it reached 902,000 viewers.

Five's airing of 'Hollow Man', starring Kevin Bacon as an arrogant scientist who makes himself invisible, netted 762,000 viewers and a 3.8% share of the 9pm to 11.15pm audience.

On Sunday night the first part of a new series of 'Inspector George Gently', starring Martin Shaw as a detective in 1960s Northumberland, won the primetime slot with 5.9m viewers and a 25.3% share of the 8.30pm-10pm audience.

The first instalment of Martin Clunes' three part series 'Islands of Britain', which sees the actor on a mission to find out what it is like to live on a remote island, came in second in the ratings battle with 4.2m viewers and an 18.1% share of the 9pm-10pm audience.

Channel 4's 'The Secret Millionaire' scored 1.9m viewers and an 8.2% share of the audience. Including Channel 4+1 figures it reached 2.2m viewers.

BBC Two's coverage of 'World Championship Snooker' drew 1.9m viewers and a 9% share of the 8pm-11pm audience, beating Five's airing of 'The Devil's Own' which won 824,000 viewers and a 4.1% share of the 9pm-11pm audience.

On Saturday night 'Britain's Got Talent' dominated as usual, but its ratings were down from last week when it secured its highest audience to date of 12.2m, a 52% share of viewing.

This week it brought in 10.5m viewers and a 46.8% share. On at 8.20pm-9.20pm, it was partly up against 'The National Lottery: 1 vs 100' on BBC One at 8.05pm-8.55pm, which managed 4.1m viewers and a 19.6% share.

By a much narrower margin, ITV1 was ahead in earlier evening viewing.

Its new series of 'All Star Mr & Mrs' at 6.20pm-7.20pm was watched by 4.1m, giving the channel a 26.1% share, while BBC One's 'Robin Hood' at 6.20pm-7.05pm earned 3.5m and a 22.6% share.

'Primeval' followed for ITV1 with 4.7m (a quarter of the audience), beating the 3.8m who tuned to BBC One for variety show 'Tonight's the Night'.

BBC One took back the lead after 'Britain's Got Talent', with 'Casualty' attracting 5.2m viewers at 9.10pm-10pm after the news.

From 9.20pm to 11.40pm ITV1 screened 'X2', the second X-Men movie, securing an audience of 3m and a share of 17.6%.
