Lord Carter's report includes a recommendation that all new car radios sold in the UK by the end of 2013 should be digital, similar to legislation already introduced in France.

The Digital Radio Development Bureau said car manufacturers in the UK have expressed support in principle for such a recommendation which sets out a clear timetable for the industry to move from analogue to digital.

Both Vauxhall and Ford already offer DAB in some car models.

The Digital Britain report sets out a five-point plan to encourage the take-up of digital radios in cars, which includes working with manufacturers so that vehicles sold with radio are digitally enabled by the end of 2013, the development of portable digital converters, promoting the introduction of more sophisticated traffic information via DAB and comprehensive marketing by broadcasters, and developing a European approach to digital radio.
