The app, which allows users to stream free music and temporarily store playlists on their iPhone even without an internet connection, has become the top free download of the week for the iPhone following its launch on Sunday.

The audio streaming app, available only to Spotify users with a premium subscription has out performed current favourites including ‘Super Hard Puzzle' and ‘What's your IQ?' to top the iTunes download chart.

Spotify has yet to confirm the full number of downloads, but according to , the app has garnered over 3,000 customer reviews thanks to a wave of publicity.

Revolution first revealed in May, but it has only just been made available to download in the UK after being given the greenlight by Apple, despite fears that the free streaming music app poses a worthy rival to iTunes.

The app is free to download, but users are then required to sign up to Spotify's £9.99 monthly subscription service. It is yet to be seen whether the popularity of the iPhone app will translate into an increase in premium users for Spotify.
