1. Spotify
The Spotify app is a real competitor to iTunes; after all, download any track you could possibly want for £9.99 a month - yes please. The people at Apple are probably scratching their chins about what to do about it - it's been submitted to iTunes and I'm pretty sure they are combing it for any kind of bugs or breaches. Spotify allows users to take their existing playlists with them on their phone and to search over via wi-fi or a 3G network for new tracks. But even better you can download songs or entire playlists so that you can listen even when you don't have a signal or a wi-fi connection. Nice.
2. Twittelator
A strong player in a crowded field. It's a question of personal taste, but for me this is the best. Add pics/vids and GPS position to your tweets via a so-simple-you-could-use-it-with-your-nose interface. Nerd heaven.
3. iDrum
There are loads of drum machine thingies on the App Store. This one is different. It's by isotope, which is a real music-tech company, not just a pretender looking for a follow up to the iFart app. You can make real music with it like real music people do.
4. Camera Zoom
If it came in a tin it would say ‘allows you to zoom in while taking pictures or videos on your iPhone'. It also costs less than a happy meal.
5. Shazam
Shazam was one of the coolest things in the world even before it was on the iPhone. They've chucked every single bit of smart they have at this app. It's part discovery network, part social network, part impulse network - more zeitgeisty than Barack Obama. Oh yeah, and it's free.
6. Google
Voice controlled Google searching. Completely useless in the real world but a good way of encouraging your children to swear. WARNING: don't say 'Shazam' while using it. That would just be too 'now'.
