The team will assist the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) in managing the events and the athletes, as well as providing equipment and facilities such as feeding and misting stations, race vehicles and start facilities.

LOCOG director of sport Debbie Jevans said: "The London Marathon organiser has a wealth of expertise that will prove invaluable as we work to deliver the marathon events in 2012. I look forward to working with them."

"We are honoured to have been asked by LOCOG to help organise the Olympic and Paralympic marathons," added London Marathon race director Dave Bedford. "We are delighted to have been chosen to see this task through, particularly with our knowledge of the streets of London."

The London Marathon organising team originally helped design the route in the bid phase for the 2012 Games.

They will now work to confirm the exact route and all the required arrangements, such as transport and crowd management.

Around 100 athletes are expected to take part in the marathon events in 2012.
