Traffic has increased on the route for the annual Robin Hood Marathon which has been held on the same route for the last 30 years. The congestion means the marathon can no longer take place on the current course, according to organiser Sweatshop Events.
Sweatshop is working with Nottingham City Council to re-route the 26-mile race but says it is unlikely to go ahead on this year’s scheduled date of 30 September.
Chris Sumner, race director for the marathon, said: "There are some issues on route around the National Watersports Centre at Home Pierrepont and up until now we have been able to run on quiet roads around it. We will no longer be able to do that as it has become busier."
Last year 1,424 people completed the marathon and 12,000 people registered for the Nottingham Festival of Running which also includes the Robin Hood Half Marathon and a family fun run.
