Sales at its sister supermarket chain, Waitrose, increased 12.7%, bringing the total rise for parent John Lewis Partnership to 9.7%, in the week to 18 July.

David Barford, region B director of selling operations at John Lewis said: ‘We had the weather: four seasons in a day, we had the battle to bring back the Ashes to its rightful home and we had the battle at the Open for golf's glory.'

Toys, nursery and haberdashery were the best areas of performance with an increase in sales of 13%. Menswear and sports were also up 10%.

Waitrose supply chain director Mark Williamson said: ‘Despite the unseasonal weather, frozen foods saw outstanding results. Frozen fish sales were up by 475 year-on-year, while ice cream and lollies were up 36% and chips and potatoes up 55% on the same week last year.'

Williamson also added that the Essentials range continues to have positive growth. A further 18 products have been introduced, bringing the range to around 900 items.
