John Lewis launches first new store format in 20 years

LONDON - John Lewis is to roll out a fresh shop format for the first time in two decades. It will focus exclusively on the home sector, including electrical goods and home technology.

The standalone format will be a third of the size of a typical John Lewis department store and will offer additional features including an espresso bar, customer collection and a gift-list service.

John Lewis will be investing £6m in the initiative, with the first new-look shop due to open this autumn in Poole, Dorset. The retailer believes that there are about 30 locations across the UK that would support the format.

Gareth Thomas, retail director at John Lewis, said: ‘We know our competitors have a much higher level of coverage in the UK than we do and our research has shown that there are growth opportunities for our business in smaller-format shops, giving our customers more convenient access to John Lewis products.'
