Debenhams to open more stores as profits increase

LONDON - Debenhams is continuning its expansion programme as it announces an 11% rise in pre-tax profits for the six months to the end of February.

During the financial period the department store chain opened four new stores. In the 2010 financial year five more stores are scheduled to open as well as two new Desire stores.

Despite an increase in profits Debenhams reported that like-for-like sales were down 3.6%.

Debenhams recently appointed JWT to hanlde its £15m ad account following a pitch. The account was previosuly held by Mile Calcraft Briginshaw Duffy, who resigned the account in order to pitch for the John Lewis business.
