It aims to help pet owners keep their pets, while boosting rental income for landlords and reduce the number of pets abandoned when their owners are forced to move into rented accommodation.
The dog welfare charity has created a dedicated website www.letswithpets.org.uk to support the initiative, offering downloadable advice booklets and practical tips for landlords and tenants with pets. Some of the advice suggests how to write a CV for your pet and deal with a prospective landlord.
Earlier this year the charity reported an alarming increase in pet owners forced to downsize or move to rented accommodation. With lettings agencies and private landlords often hesitant to allow pets in their properties, the Trust's re-homing centres have witnessed a nationwide influx of pets reluctantly handed over by owners forced to downsize.
Dogs Trust has a network of 17 re-homing centres across the UK. The charity cares for more than 16,000 stray, unwanted and abandoned dogs each year.
