Blinkx signs MSN UK and Russian portal for video ad service

SAN FRANCISCO - Video search engine Blinkx has signed up Russian internet portal Rambler.ru as one of the first clients for its new video search and online advertising service Red Label, under a revenue-sharing deal.

will employ Blinkx's video search for its database of 3m Russian language video clips.

The Red Label video advertising service builds on Blinkx's existing search and advertising technology. It now allows websites to incorporate its speech-based video search and video analysis software to monetise traffic through targeted advertising delivered by Blinkx.

Revenue for up to 10,000 searches a day goes to the client site, while above 10,000 searches revenue is split evenly between the client site and Blinkx.

Blinkx has also announced that it is making content within its video index available through MSN UK's Microsoft Live Search.

The announcement extends a licensing deal with Microsoft sealed in October 2006 to provide video search capabilities for parts of the MSN network and Live.com.

The Russian internet market is set to grow to 40m users by the end of 2008, according to eMarketer, and Rambler Media is one of the country's major internet portals.

Suranga Chanratillake, founder and chief executive officer of Blinkx, said: "Russia is one of the largest, fastest growing internet markets in Europe, and we're delighted to partner with one of the country's most prominent media companies."

Blinkx's searchable content includes TV and news clips; short documentaries; music videos; and video blogs. It uses speech recognition technology for its search application, rather than metadata-based keyword searches.

Earlier this month, ITN announced a deal with Blinkx to deploy its video advertising platform AdHoc, which scans videos to determine the theme of the content before delivering a relevant video ad, throughout ITN's web offering.

Last month, Blinkx teamed up with on-demand content aggregator On Networks to place relevant ads next to footage carried via On Networks and to share ad revenue with the aggregator.
