Amazon's Mobile Payments Service provides developers with an app they can plug into their website to allow customers to pay for good using their existing Amazon account details.

The system is compatible with the iPhone and Blackberry and handsets running on Android, Windows Mobile, and Palm OS.

The move puts Amazon in direct competition with Apple and PayPal, which also offer mobile payment systems.

The Amazon software will automatically detect which handset users are accessing a website from and provide compatible webpages. Customers can then click on a 'pay with Amazon' button, which will prompt them to login to Amazon and select their payment method. They are then sent back to the retailer to complete the transaction.

Amazon has been testing the system on its own site and the websites of third-party retailers who sell goods on Amazon.com.
