British Olympic Association Good morning, British Olympic Association.

Mktg Hi, do you have a customer helpline?

BOA It depends. What is it for?

Mktg I'm a big sports fan, and I've read this stuff that the BOA has had to change its commercial deals because it's been getting the athletes to do too much sponsor work. I was hoping to find out a bit more.

BOA I'm sorry, I still don't understand what you want to know.

Mktg I've been reading about it over the past couple of days, so I wanted to find out more. I've heard athletes are missing training and stuff like that, and it's been this big scandal.

BOA I'll put you through to the media department, just one moment. (Mktg overhears muffled conversation.) You've got to be really careful with some of these people, what he's just asked ... (Mktg is put on hold and transferred.) Hi, good morning (name) speaking.

Mktg Hi, I'm not sure if you can help but I've just been put through by reception. (Explains query again.)

BOA No, no. What's been seen in the press is a draft, so nothing has actually been signed.

Mktg So are the athletes complaining about doing too much sponsor work?

BOA No, it's a standard process. Contracts are rewritten, and it is a draft. I can send you a line about it if that would help.

Mktg You do see some of the athletes, such as Jessica Ennis, in marketing campaigns all the time.

BOA That's nothing to do with the Olympics. Jess hasn't been selected for Team GB yet. The only athletes selected for the team so far are 11 sailors. What has been reported is the team agreement for team members for the Olympics. I hope that clarified things for you.

Mktg Yes, thank you.

VERDICT

Sports fans are passionate, so the BOA should be ready to handle complaints that are made directly to it. However, it seemed unprepared for a call of this nature. The first call-handler was unashamedly rude and carelessly allowed a derogatory comment about Mole's call to be overheard. Although the press officer was more helpful, Mole was still made to feel like an idiot for calling.
