We'll Call You - BT

Mole was intrigued by news of BT's 'porn filter' for broadband customers, because we want to be certain our computer is clear of such smut, we hasten to add.

BT: Hello, BT Sales, how can I help?

Mktg: Hi, I'm a customer and I read in the news yesterday about this porn filter that BT is doing on broadband and I want to find out how it works.

BT: Bear with me one second. (Reads) Using our parent control software, parents like yourself can choose what children can see depending on their age and maturity. The set-up process is automatic with software on BT Home Hub.

Mktg: I have a teenage son, who I don't want looking at porn on the internet, but my husband likes to go on sites such as Nuts and Zoo ...

BT: It will put an automatic lock on it as a whole.

Mktg: I think my husband will be annoyed if he starts getting blocked though.

BT: But that's the thing. You can't do it as an individual, because you don't know who is on there.

Mktg: So it doesn't sound very good then.

BT: Unfortunately, computers are not that advanced where they can tell who is on them, so they will never be able to know who is on it at just one time. It's either one or nothing.

Mktg: OK so if I do choose it, there is no way of porn getting through? Because some people are saying the filter is not strong enough.

BT: Erm, if you set it correctly there should be no question.

Mktg: Can you take it off at any time?

BT: Yeah, you can remove any parental controls at any time.

Mktg: OK, thanks for your help.

VERDICT

The call-handler was able to answer my questions, even though he sounded as if he was reading a prepared response. He was friendly, but a little patronising and inaccurate when talking about how computers work, which could be off-putting to some customers.
