Virgin Media has launched a beta trial of its first online and mobile TV player, with a next generation cross-platform pause and resume feature.

The announcement comes ahead of the launches of rival VoD services and .

Virgin has negotiated a deal with MTV Networks UK and Ireland for hundreds of hours of content from MTV Comedy Central and Nickelodean shows, including 'South Park', 'Dora the Explorer' and 'The Hills' for the player.

The Virgin Media player will also include content from LIVING, Disney, Cartoon Network and National Geographic.

Only Virgin Media’s XL TV customers with its broadband connection will be able use the player from today (29 July). Virgin has not confirmed when the trial period will end, but the player will be available through other subscription packages before the end of the year.

The Virgin Media Player on mobile will launch with 4oD content and an MTV mobile channel called Snax. It will be available for Virgin mobile pay monthly customers for an hour a day at no additional cost.

Kelloggs, Cadbury, Warner Bros and FilmFlex have all booked pre-roll ads for the launch.

Yesterday, to £964.2m in three months to the end of June, and stated that it had added 9,100 net new customers, compared with a 27,800-customer loss a year ago.
