Translation app: another excuse for Brits not to learn foreign languages

LONDON - Britain's notoriety for presuming everyone else should speak English could be boosted further by the launch of an iPhone that instantly translates English to Spanish.

Jibbigo lets users translate English to Spanish and vice versa by speaking into the iPhone, recording one sentence at a time, which is translated automatically.

The app has a vocabulary of 40,000 words, and is biased towards common travel queries and health information.

Although full functionality is only available on the 3G iPhone, the app works offline, and only needs to be connected for service updates.

Users can inform the developers of mistranslations using a thumbs down button and can correct what the app thinks they said using the keyboard.

Existing translation apps work as talking phrase books, letting the user select a phrase which is then read out loud in the local language.
