Toyota GB eyes new Prius recall as crisis deepens

LONDON - Toyota is considering the global recall of 300,000 Prius hybrid models, which it has been claimed may suffer braking problems on icy roads.

A Toyota GB spokesman said the manufacturer was looking into US and Japanese customer feedback, and that no decision had yet been made.

However, he confirmed that any global recall would impact the 3,500 UK-based Prius owners, as the same operational software is used across all international markets.

An admission of problems with Prius would prove another huge blow to the Japanese automotive giant, which has already launched the recall of eight million vehicles suffering with an accelerator pedal fault.

On Friday, activity to help reassure consumers, five days after the marque rolled out a similar campaign in the US.

The full page letter, signed by Toyota GB managing director Miguel Fonseca, carried the headline "A message of reassurance to all Toyota customers".

Although Toyota is closely monitoring customer opinions and concerns, no decision has yet been taken on whether to run further marketing activity this week, said the spokesman.
