Tiscali UK future in doubt amid boardroom speculation

LONDON - The future of Italian company Tiscali, which operates IPTV and broadband services in the UK, is unclear, with the company set to hold a board meeting this afternoon to discuss the future of chief executive Tommaso Pompei.

According to reports, Pompei has fallen out with directors over strategy and could resign after the meeting later this afternoon, having agreed an estimated £1.5m severance package.

Tiscali UK, which has struggled to grow its IPTV subscriber base to around 36,000, has been the subject of takeover speculation for some time.

In recent weeks, the company has been forced to issue several denials regarding a potential takeover. BT and Sky have been linked with a potential acquisition of its UK operation in the past, while Vodafone has been linked with Tiscali's Italian arm.

Pompei, who said last month that he expected Tiscali's UK and Italian operations to be bought by rivals within the next two years, is expected to be replaced by Tiscali board director Mario Rosso, chief executive of Italian news agency ANSA.

Tiscali has 4.5 million active users and 2.07 million broadband customers across Italy, the UK, Netherlands, Germany and the Czech Republic.

Tiscali UK is the third-largest broadband provider in the UK with 1.2 million broadband customers, of whom 350,000 are voice and broadband consumers.

Last November, it set a target to reach 200,000 IPTV subscribers in the UK by the end of this year.
