The company has started carrying an ad for computer technology outfit Hewlett-Packard around its EPG. Jonathan Sykes, managing director of content strategy, said the company aimed to expand its ad offerings.
Sykes said: "Advertising is going to be a big play for us. We are not heavily pushing it right now, but as our (IPTV subscriber) numbers grow we will do more."
He added that Tiscali also intends to expand its video-on-demand offering, with the launch of more branded VoD channels and an extension of its catch-up service to numerous linear TV channels.
Tiscali has begun its biggest marketing campaign in the UK for five years to flag the extended availability of the IPTV service around the UK. Until recently, the IPTV service, which had 36,000 subscribers at the end of September, was available only in Greater London and Stevenage. It aims to increase its IPTV subscriber base to 200,000 by the end of the year and to 520,000 by 2012.
Tiscali's move follows Virgin Media's announcement last year that it plans to start carrying ads around its VoD service and EPG. The broadcaster has been researching into the effectiveness of carrying ads around its service in a bid to sell the inventory to clients.
