The Street picks up 4.2m viewers to lead Monday's ratings

LONDON - The penultimate episode of BBC One's acclaimed drama series 'The Street' topped the ratings at 9pm-10pm last night with 4.2m viewers tuning in, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The Jimmy McGovern-penned show, which this week starred Stephen Graham, Maxine Peake and Ruth Jones, got a nearly 20% share of viewing and comfortably beat 'Monday Monday', its ITV1 rival in the 9pm-10pm time slot.

The comedy drama, set in the head office of a supermarket chain, features established names such as Fay Ripley and Neil Stuke but only managed to secure 12% of the audience -- totalling 2.7m viewers.

However, a surprise flop of the night was the first episode of Channel 4's much-publicised documentary 'On Tour With the Queen', which is tracing the monarch's early trips around her colonies, fronted by actor and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah.

Only 1.7m people tuned in, giving Channel 4 a 7.7% share though leaving it fourth in the ratings behind Five's 'The Hotel Inspector', which attracted 2.1m people -- 9% of the total audience. Another 65,000 watched the programme on Channel 4+1.

At the bottom of the pile was BBC Two's 'The Trouble with Girls', which charted a year in the life of three 16-year-old girls in Rochdale and brought in just 6% of the slot's potential audience at 1.3m viewers.
