Staples shortlists three for $130m global media account

NEW YORK - Staples, the US-based office products retailer, has shortlisted incumbent agencies ZenithOptimedia, MediaCom and Universal McCann to compete for its $130m (£67m) global media planning and buying account.

Publicis' ZenithOptimedia is the incumbent on the £6m UK account, WPP's MediaCom handles the US portion of the business, while Interpublic Group's Universal McCann manages the Canadian portion of the business.

The bulk of Staples' budget is spent in the US and the review is being overseen by consultancy Pile and Co.

It is understood that agencies outside the US were approached directly by the client to pitch for the account. The UK is the client's second largest market.

Final presentations are expected to take place over the next fortnight.

In October, Staples awarded its £6m creative account to Euro RSCG London as part of an expansion of the brand beyond stationery. The firm has recently diversified into product ranges such as office furniture and satellite navigation systems.

The retailer opened its first UK store in Swansea in 1993 and now owns a network of 85 stores across the country, with plans to open five every year.
