Spinnaker launches phone line for alien sightings in District 9 promotion

LONDON - Digital agency Spinnaker has set up a phone line for people to call and report non-human activity as part of a promotional campaign launched for today's release of 'District 9', the Sony Pictures sci-fi film produced by 'The Lord of the Rings' director Peter Jackson.

The phone line, which is being promoted via the Google ad network, has been set up to reflect the real life documentary feel of the film and to bring the alien sci-fi content to life.

Since the line went live there have been hundreds of callers leaving messages about alien sightings in the UK, said Spinnaker.

The phone line forms part of the seeding phase of a larger promotional campaign created by Spinnaker.

Spinnaker has created an online campaign featuring rich media ad-formats that highlight the sci-fi alien theme, as well as herald Peter Jackson's involvement.

The ads, running on sites including IMDB, Sky, The Guardian and MySpace, also feature exclusive content, which users are encouraged to share via social networking websites.

Homepage takeovers have been created for MySpace, IGN, IMDB and Sky Sports.

Helene Smith, senior digital account manager at Spinnaker, said: "District 9 is a water-cooler film in that people will be talking about it -- everything we have done with this campaign has been to facilitate those talking points and make sure that the conversation can take place beyond just viewing the advert."

'District 9' was ranked number one at its opening weekend in the US, earning $37.4m
