The pageant – expected to measure 7.5 miles long from end to end – will be one of the major focal points of celebration during the special Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

It will integrate live entertainment and music from the six decades of the Queen’s realm, fireworks and special effects including a mechanical flame-spitting dragon.

Both historic and modern boats will be on display, from rowing boats to large motorised crafts, the Queen travelling in the specially crafted Royal Barge.

Organisers are expecting more than one million people to line the banks of the Thames along the route from Putney Bridge in the west to Canary Wharf in the east to witness the spectacle and join in the celebrations.

Roads, piers, and bridges will be closed to traffic up to 50 giant screens will relay all the action.

The organisation of the event is being led by Lord Salisbury, who – as Viscount Cranborne – organised the D-Day, VE Day and VJ Day 50th anniversary events.

"We are planning the greatest Thames flotilla for 350 years to mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. I believe that we should recognise her sixty years of selfless public service with an event that can properly express our admiration and gratitude. The Pageant is just that," he said.
