The awards ceremony was streamed live and for the first time, winners took home an award designed by Fredrikson Stallard and created by Swarovski.
Among winners were James McAvoy, who won Best Actor for Filth, while Julie Walters was awarded the coveted Richard Harris Award for outstanding contribution by an actor to British film.
Ben Roberts, director of the BFI Film Fund, said: "This has been a standout year for British film and the BIFAs has once again kicked off the awards season in style, putting the wild creativity and bold storytelling of the UK's independent sector centre stage."
As part of the event, guests joined Moët & Chandon to create a seven-foot champagne fountain.
Meanwhile, a mouthwatering menu included salmon, horseradish and dill rillettes; pan fried fillet of bream with bubble and squeak cake; roasted butternut squash and sage pithivier; and salted caramel pannacotta with sweet cranberries and vanilla puree.
During the after party Moët & Chandon was served alongside Belvedere vodka cocktails, while music was provided by nine-piece The Incredibly Strange Film Band, who specialise in TV and film themes from the 1960s to present day.
