In pictures: Chris Turner secures place in Beat the Brief final

Comedian and hip hop improviser Chris Turner was chosen as the winner of the second heat of corporate entertainment talent competition Beat the Brief, which took place at Brooklyn Bowl London last night (15 July).

Turner, who took audience suggestions to create and perform a bespoke rap, was picked by judges alongside magician and illusionist Michael Jordan as the two best performers on the night, based on how much they entertained an industry audience of around 150 guests, as well as tailored their acts to a corporate events brief.

Audience members were then able to vote on their favourite, who will go through to compete in the final taking place at the Event Awards at Troxy on 2 October. Turner will join heat one winning act BeatVox and one final act in the Beat the Brief final.

The spoof brief, which was created by Beat the Brief’s organisers and corporate entertainment company Sternberg Clarke, was for the launch of a new chain of bowling-themed restaurants called Bowled Over, which feature a 1950s style with a modern twist. Acts had to create a performance for the client’s launch party for press and prospective clients, prior to the speeches, to engage the audience and to reflect the brand.

Other acts that performed on the night included violinist and comedian Sid Bowfin, who took song suggestions from the audience and weaved them into his act, and Spark Fire Dance, an acrobatic duo which used fire and pyrotechnics in their performance.

Acrobatic duo Syndicate Circus incorporated bowling-themed props into their act, as well as performing to1950s-style music, while The Showstoppers created a bespoke, on-the-spot musical themed in the style of Grease and West Side Story.

The panel of industry judges consisted of Lynden Bugler, event manager at British Airways; Ben Lloyd-Evans, director at Sternberg Clarke; Samantha Edwards, news editor at Event magazine; Jo Plinston, senior event manager at Haymarket Publishing; and Michelle Noonan, marketing manager at Brooklyn Bowl London.

On the night, guests were treated to food and drink supplied by the venue, as well as games of free bowling after the main event.
