Peperami set for healthier makeover

LONDON - Unilever will reposition its Peperami brand later this year as a healthier snack choice on the back of the launch of two additional lines.

It will add a barbecue variant of the original Peperami in April and a beef jerky product in September, which it will promote as being lean meat. It will also roll out a fresh strapline.

Current Peperami ads carry the tagline 'Peperami: it's a bit of an animal', and feature the animated 'Animal' character it introduced in 1993.

The character was temporarily dropped when Unilever relaunched the brand in 2007, with a focus on the quality of the meat, but was reinstated for a TV campaign by Lowe London last September. The latter showed the character flitting between bouts of tenderness and maniacal anarchy before shredding itself in a waste disposal unit.

Lowe declined to comment on the launches, while calls to Unilever were not returned.
