LONDON - Orange has partnered with Barclaycard to roll out a new contactless co-branded credit card, as the battle for mobile banking customers grows ever fiercer.

The announcement, which follows the launch of O2-Natwest joint venture O2 Money last year, is part of a longer-term project between Orange and Barclays to develop contactless payment through mobile phones.

With the Orange Credit Card, customers will receive automated SMS alerts to keep a tab on their spending. Cardholders are also able to set a weekly or monthly budget and set alerts when the budget is reached.

For every £1 spent, customers will earn an Orange Credit Card reward point, which can be redeemed online at www.orangecreditcard.co.uk, or donated to charity.

Chris Wood, managing director at Barclaycard, said: "We are seeing demand from both retailers and customers for ever more convenient ways to pay and accept payment, and we believe that mobile and contactless technologies are key to meeting those needs."

In July, O2 and NatWest launched O2 Money, which offered consumers two pre-paid Visa cards.

The Cash Manager card, aimed at adults, will allow consumers to load up money to the card and use it wherever Visa is accepted. A Load & Go card will be targeted at younger consumers, aged between 13 and 18.
