
The service marks a new way to watch TV, with other online services also launching into TV streaming. Last.FM, the online music service, is launching a free online TV service as it prepares to expand globally.
Last.TV plans to launch in January and will initially be accessible through the Last.FM site. The TV service will be sponsored and feature live performances. It will also carry pre- and post-roll video ads.
Sky is offering its service on subscription, which costs from £15 a month. Users who are also members of Xbox Live will be able to watch programmes directly through their consoles.
Last.FM was acquired by CBS in 2007 for $280m. Over the next year, it will market the brand at music festivals across the UK and Europe. CBS is also considering launching a festival under the Last.FM brand name.
Last.FM, which enables users to stream music from playlists they create, is free to use in the US, UK and Germany, but charges users outside these countries after 30 days of free use.
