One in four visitors to football websites are female

LONDON – With the new Premiership 2003/2004 football season almost under way, research reveals that one in four visitors to football websites are women, according to Hitwise.

The online intelligence service reveals the finding as traffic to increased by 33% in the last 12 weeks to football websites. The surge in traffic means that football sites represent 0.94% of all online traffic in the UK.

Hitwise said that the most visited football site is Football365.com, which accounted for 7.26% of traffic, and the most visited football club is unsurprisingly Manchester United. Despite the millions that have been spent at Chelsea by its new owner Roman Abramovich, it is only the ninth most-visited football club website.

However, with wins like this week's two-nil victory over Slovakia's MKS Zilina in the first leg of the Champions League qualifier, Claudio Ranieri's expensively re-assembled side could move up the chart if they live up to the immense expectation that now hangs over Stamford Bridge.

Hitwise demographics showed that more than one in four of all visitors are female, with 27% of visitors from London and the South East, 15% from the North West, with 11.26% of visitors aged over 55.

The most bookmarked football sites are fantasy football sites, as fans register their fantasy teams before the season officially begins.

The Sun's is far and away the most popular fantasy football site, with a 29% share of the sports fantasy sector and is the fifth most-visited football site overall. The website has risen by more than 100 places in the last two weeks, with visitors spending an average of 14 minutes and 28 seconds making their team selections for their chance to win a total prize pool of £250,000.

In terms of what football fans are searching for, Manchester United is most popular, although David Beckham's recent arrival at Real Madrid has made the club more searched for than every other UK football club.
