Five Live commentators take a leaf from Eminem's book

LONDON – Portly football commentator Alan Green will take a turn at the mic, freestyling a la Eminem in a new television commercial to promote BBC Radio Five Live.

The ad campaign, created in-house by Ron Scapello of BBC Broadcast, spoofs the rapping competition in the Eminem film '8 Mile' and promotes Five Live's Premiership football coverage.

In a London hip-hop club, Five Live football commentators Green, Jonathan Pearce and Mike Ingham take to the stage and attempt to wow the crowd with their dramatic descriptions of goals.

Other famous personalities to appear in the ad are the footballers Sol Campbell and a bare-chested Ashley Cole, who are on the decks; DJ Spoony and Mikee B of the Dreem Teem; and Mark 'Chappers' Chapman, who is famous for his on-air banter with Sara Cox on Radio 1's breakfast show.

The commentaries heard in the ads are all from real goals taken from last season's coverage of the Premiership.

Bob Shennan, controller of Radio Five Live, said: "Radio Five Live is rightly proud of its excellent Premiership coverage and the trails are fun and engaging, showing our commentators displaying their craft and not taking themselves too seriously."

The campaign will appear on BBC One and Two, the digital channels BBC Three and News 24, as well as on the website, with the full trail appearing online from Saturday August 9. There will also be ambient media supporting the campaign.
