The decision to ticket the event and reduce audience numbers from 2013’s high of 500,000 to 100,000 was , who cited safety issues as the main cause for limiting the event’s capacity, after talks with the Metropolitan Police Service, the British Transport Police, the London Ambulance Service, the London Fire Brigade, Transport for London, local authorities and other key partners.
Johnson said: "These dazzling celebrations have shown London at its best. I hope everyone who attended and watched from home, here in the UK and across the globe, were as impressed with this fabulous showcase for our great city.
"The success of this huge event is down to the hard work of all those involved, including the Met Police, emergency services, Transport For London, local authorities and many others that made sure everyone enjoyed their evening and got home safely. A great start to 2015, I’d like to thank everyone involved and wish you all a very happy New Year."
The event in numbers:
- 12,000 fireworks created 50,000 projectiles
- 30 tonnes of equipment was used
- Three firework barges were situated on the River Thames
- 85 separate organisations were involved in planning the event
- Approximately 14 million people watched the display on TV
- A crew of 300 set off the fireworks
- 3,000 stewards assisted the public inside and outside the viewing areas
- 120 Team London ambassadors worked throughout the day
