NME launches music-themed social media community

LONDON - Music magazine NME is taking on MySpace by launching a social media platform that will allow bands and individuals to create profiles to showcase their music.

The social media platform NME Breakthrough will be available through NME.com and will be sponsored by BlackBerry. The site will enable bands, artists and individuals to create profiles and upload their own music and videos.

Performing a similar function to social networking site MySpace, users will be able to create a customisable profile that will enable them to grow their own fan bases through community engagement.

will be integrated with NME’s editorial content. Music editor Jaimie Hodgson will use the site to uncover new talent, which will feature in NME’s Radar section.

Bands will be hand-picked to experience specific editorial and live opportunities, the first of which will see a chosen band perform the opening slot at this year’s Lovebox festival on 16 July.

Playing on the main stage, the band will open for Dizzee Rascal, Noisettes, Ellie Goulding and The Maccabees.
