Domestic ad revenues were up 4% while international ad revenues were up 6% in Viacom's second quarter.

Operating expenses at the company's media networks division, which includes TV brands such as MTV and Nickelodeon, also rose by 2% to $1.3bn.

The rise was principally due to an increase in programming and employee costs, according to the company.

The company's overall revenues, which include its Paramount movie business, were up 2% to $3.3bn (£2.08bn).

Overall earnings after taxes were up 51% to $420m.
