London 2012 organiser Locog will this month begin the mammoth task of recruiting the 70,000 volunteers it needs to stage the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The process will be the biggest post-war recruitment campaign in UK history and will start exactly two years before the London 2012 Games on 27 July.

Known as Games Makers, the volunteers will be split into two groups: those who fulfil specialist medical, sport and press roles and those with general responsibilities.

Up to 1,500 of the Games Maker roles will be made available for those under the age of 18 through a Young Games Maker programme, to be unveiled in July 2011.

In addition, London Mayor Boris Johnson is looking for a posse of London volunteers, responsible for making sure all visitors get the best possible welcome during the Games.

The application process for specialist roles starts on 27 July, with entries for general roles being accepted from 15 September.

Singer and talent judge Alesha Dixon is fronting the campaign to get people on board.

Earlier this week the government signed off a multi-million pound debt and land deal with the mayor, to avoid endangering parts of the 2012 Olympic legacy.
