
Applications for what are being referring to as the ‘generalist’ positions, such as welcome-desk staff, ticket checkers, drivers and event stewards, opened at 8am this morning.
Interested parties will now have six weeks to register their details before applications close at midnight on 27 October.
Two thirds – more than 45,000 – of the total number of roles for London 2012 will be generalist volunteer positions.
Worldwide Olympic Partner McDonald’s has been raising awareness of the Games Maker volunteer programme through a two-week, UK-wide roadshow.
"This is a watershed moment for the hospitality sector; it marks the start of the volunteers’ journey to 2012 but also what is shaping up to be a golden decade for hospitality," said McDonald’s UK & Northern Europe chief people officer David Fairhurst.
"It is our ambition to make sure the chosen Olympic and Paralympic volunteers gain valuable and transferrable skills, providing an enduring legacy for the growing hospitality sector, as well as for the people who are the face of Britain’s service industry, beyond 2012."
London 2012 Games Makers will need to be aged 18 or over on 1 January 2012, and be available to volunteer for a minimum of ten days during either the Olympic Games or Paralympic Games and for at least three days of training.
The Young Games Maker programme for up to 1,500 volunteer roles for young people under the age of 18 will be unveiled in July 2011.
The Mayor of London is also aiming to recruit up to 8,000 London ambassadors to help and advise visitors travelling to London in Games time.
The application process for the specialist sports, medical, press operations and anti-doping roles opened on 27 July. So far 8,000 entries have been received, close to half of the number of specialists required.
