LG creates internet-ready TVs in Netflix partnership

NEW YORK - LG Electronics has partnered with online DVD delivery service Netflix to develop a series of television sets that will stream Netflix movies directly through the internet without an additional set-top device.

Netflix, best known for its online DVD hire service in the US, will offer about 12,000 movies and TV shows from its library of over 100,000 titles for instant streaming through internet-ready LG televisions.

LG's line of high definition Netflix televisions will be called Broadband HDTVs and are expected to cost around $300 (£205) more than models without internet access.

The Broadband HDTVs will be available in four models, ranging between 42-inch and 60-inch plasma and LCD screens.

Netflix currently provides the streaming service through a number of additional devices, such as the Xbox 360, special Blu-Ray players and a set-top boxes made by Silicon Valley start-up Roku.

Providing direct-to-TV internet service without an additional device was the natural evolution of the streaming video said Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings, adding that "TV symbolizes the ultimate destination."

Other electronics companies are expected to follow suit.

Sony recently announced that its Bravia televisions will be able to access the internet through a separate module, which will be built into the set in the near future.

Samsung and Panasonic are believed to reveal similar devices this week during Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas.
