Lance Armstrong uses Twitter to invite fans on cycle tour

LONDON - Seven-times Tour de France winner and serial tweeter Lance Armstrong used Twitter to invite cyclists on an informal cycle in Paisley in Scotland and was joined by 200 fans.

American Armstrong surprised his Twitter followers on Monday when he tweeted: "Hey Glasgow, Scotland!! I'm coming your way tomorrow. Who wants to go for a bike ride??"

The message was followed by the words: "Hey Glasgow - ride's at 12 noon. Location tbd. Stay tuned! Still dialling it in. And yes, I have my raincoat!"

Hundreds of fans turned up yesterday in Paisley on a variety of bike types outside the Ashtree House hotel and were joined by crowds on foot.

Armstrong said that he had not planned a route and so he and his two-wheeled entourage ended up cycling around the town for two hours.

After the event, Armstrong thanked those who had turned up, saying: "Thanks to everyone who turned up to ride in Paisley! I figured we'd have a nice ride for a dozen or so. But 100's came. Haha! Awesome!"

"And hopw [sic] great was it that the Flying Scotsman Graeme Obree came out?? Legend."

Obree, a former world champion cyclist, was one of those who turned up at the event.

Armstrong is no stranger to Twitter. During this year's Tour de France, he sidestepped journalists and used Twitter to deliver his views on rival Alberto Contador, which were then followed up in the press.
