Lager sector tops the growth tables in Biggest Brands

LONDON - The British are drinking more lager than ever, according to Marketing's Biggest Brands survey.

No less than four lager brands -- Stella Artois, Carling, Foster's and Budweiser -- take their place in the list of Britain's top 50 FMCG brands, based on exclusive data from ACNielsen.

Each brand shows growth of 18% or more, making lager the fastest-growing sector in the list.

Foster's shows the biggest sales hike in the top 50, with growth of 27.6%, following a year that saw it invest heavily its "Honorary Australians" advertising campaign through M&C Saatchi. Collectively, the four lager brands spent more than £35m on advertising in the past year.

But while lager sales show no sign of waning, coffee is dropping off. Nescafe suffered the worst sales decline -- 8.2% -- of brands in the top 50. The brand, which is trying to woo the youth market, is battling a steady decline in coffee consumption over the past 10 years.
