Jamie Oliver asked to work culinary magic on hospital food after school success

LONDON – Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver could be set for a new series overhauling hospital food in the same way he did for school dinners on the hit Channel 4 show 'Jamie's School Dinners'.

Doctors plan to ask the "Naked Chef" to rework hospital menus to give patients healthier and more palatable meals in hospitals around the UK.

Junior doctor Eleanor Draeger will propose a motion at the British Medical Association conference in London tomorrow.

She described the state of NHS food yesterday as "woefully inadequate" and stressed the importance of a good diet to aid patients' recovery.

"Good nutrition is really important to healing," she said. "Our hospitals all have kitchens but the food is brought in plastic cartons and cooked to within an inch of its life."

If the motion goes through, Channel 4 could want to turn the project into a high-profile series like 'Jamies's School Dinners', which pulled in audiences of more than 5m during its six-week run.

The massive success of 'Jamie Oliver's Dinners', which showed children being fed processed junk food, with some meals containing less than 30% meat, forced the government into addressing the problem. Labour has pledged to allocate an extra £280m over three years on school dinners.

Oliver said at the time: "It could easily be copied for hospitals."

Separately, former 'Masterchef' presenter Loyd Grossman is working with the Department of Health on the Better Hospital Food programme.

A panel of seven highly-respected leading chefs from the hotel and restaurant sector are providing their services free of charge, alongside NHS catering staff, ward staff and managers.
