Jamie Oliver series forces government to take action on school dinners

LONDON – The success of Jamie Oliver's Channel 4 show 'Jamie's School Dinners' has forced the government into making school meals healthier after his programme made headlines as it revealed the junk food fed to schoolchildren across the UK.

The Channel 4 show, which came to the end of its five-week run last Wednesday, has caused the government to take seriously health issues raised by the show, which showed children being fed processed junk food like Turkey Twizzlers, burgers, pizza and chips.

As a result, the government has said it will re-equip school kitchens to cook healthy meals on site and give extra training to dinner ladies, as well as setting up a trust to ensure these new measures are imposed.

In an article in The Observer, Prime Minister Tony Blair pledged to set up an independent school food trust.

"The trust will draw on the remarkable work of Jamie Oliver in schools, of the Soil Association in encouraging the use of organic and local produce in school meals, and on the best advice on nutrition and eliminating processed foods."

He added: "It may take a little time to change children's tastes, but it will be worth the effort if we can get them enjoying healthy and good quality food at school. We will ask Ofsted to inspect the quality of school meals."

However, there is no immediate money available to schools to provide better food. One of Oliver's biggest problems was the paucity of the budget given to schools to make a meal for each child, averaging 37p for each child. Oliver found it almost impossible to cope.

Oliver, whose public persona has changed dramatically over the last five weeks, said of the changes: "It could be one of the biggest food revolutions that England has ever seen."
