Hay Festival Kells plans to bring together the best Irish, English-speaking and international authors for talks and events on literature and the arts.
The three-day festival will draw on Kells’s literary history as the home of The Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript created by Celtic monks, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament.
The original hay Festival takes place in Wales annually and features more than 700 events over 11 days. The programme includes interviews, lectures, current affairs debates, comedy, music, film, children’s literature and exhibitions.
Hay started to launch sister festivals in 2003 and now runs events in Europe, Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Geraldine Gaughran from Friends of Hay Festival Kells said: "We believe that partnering with a world-recognised and respected brand such as the Hay Festival will help to consolidate the efforts of the town and to raise the profile of Kells as a ‘book town’, and return culture and literature to the home of the world-famous manuscript."
Hay Festival Kells is being supported by Kells & District Chamber, Meath Partnership, Fáilte Ireland and Meath County Council.
