Gore kicks off $300m environmental hearts and minds campaign

NEW YORK - Global warming campaigner Al Gore has launched a three-year, $300m (£152m) advertising campaign to pressure US politicians into bringing in policies to combat climate change.

The campaign, called simply 'We', is to launch its first TV ad tomorrow, which claims the challenge of fighting global warming is as big as the June 6 1944 allied invasion of Normandy and the civil rights movement.

Other ads will come later featuring pairs of politicians who are normally diametrical opposites but who state their agreement on climate change, such as the Democrat Rev Al Sharpton and Republican Pat Robertson.

The , the former Democratic vice presidential who lost his bid to be president to George W Bush, is already underway with a website, which encourages people to donate, spread the message to friends, investigate solutions to global warming, and sign a petition addressed to politicians.

In addition, the Alliance for Climate Protection, which is leading the campaign, is also trying to reach people through community groups such as the Girl Scouts and the United Steelworkers union.

Gore, who is chairman of the ACP, said: "When politicians hear the American people calling loud and clear for change, they'll listen."

Gore has contributed at least $1.5m to the campaign from his $750,000 share of the Nobel Peace Prize and a matching personal gift, plus an undisclosed amount consisting of his personal profits from his film and book 'An Inconvenient Truth'.
